Leader in Field

Mr Redfern is an international leader in the field of minimally invasive surgery of the foot and ankle. In conjunction with his colleague, Joel Vernois, he has introduced percutaneous surgical techniques to UK surgeons over the last 10 years. He has travelled internationally lecturing and teaching these techniques to surgeons worldwide including Australia, Europe and USA. He jointly developed the MICA technique as well as developing and refining new techniques such as percutaneous calcaneal osteotomy.

He is regularly convener/faculty for percutaneous surgery courses in the UK, Germany & USA

Clinical Experience          

Mr Redfern has a broad experience in all abnormalities affecting the foot and ankle. 

He is a full-time specialist foot and ankle surgeon with both trauma and elective practice in the private sector. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques but his practice covers the whole spectrum of adult foot and ankle pathology including extensive experience in sports injury and arthroscopy, complex foot and ankle trauma, complex hindfoot, midfoot and forefoot reconstruction, and ankle replacement. He runs a tertiary referral centre for foot and ankle problems in London (Cleveland Clinic London) and Sussex (Sussex Foot & Ankle Centre)


Medico-legal Experience

Mr Redfern has run an expert medico-legal practice for more than 15 years specialising in a cases involving foot & ankle injury or surgery. His practice includes medical negligence expert witness work. He has completed expert witness certification from Cardiff University & Bond Solon (‘CUBS’) and is registered on the Uk Register of Expert Witnesses.

Teaching Experience

Mr Redfern has taken an active role in teaching throughout his career having taught medical students in both Cambridge University and Brighton & Sussex Medical Schools as well as surgical trainees in the UK, Europe and the USA. He continues to teach consultant surgeons worldwide in the art of minimally invasive techniques and remains committed to training other doctors.

He has also taught orthopaedic trainees in the South West / South East Thames region.


European Foot & Ankle Society (EFAS)

Mr Redfern spent 7 years as a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Foot and Ankle Society (2018). He was chair of the committee for 2 years.

He was elected to EFAS council in December 2013 and served the maximum term of 4 years. He remains a dedicated member of EFAS.
